of interface equipment.
- EIDE
(also see IDE)
- Enhanced
Integrated Drive Electronics.
- encoding
- A process
to change the form of information into an alternate form,
such as changing handwritten letters on a page to bytes
in a computer.
- EOF
- End-of-frame delimiter. A delimiter used to mark the end
of a frame.
- EPROM
- Erasable
Programmable Read Only Memory.
- erasable
optical disk
- A type
of read/write optical disk that permits the deletion of
information and the re-use of previously recorded disk areas.
- ethernet
- A local
area network protocol that uses high-speed communications
at 10 megabits per second.
- exchange
- A set
of one or more sequences, usually associated with an I/O
operation, having the same exchange identifier.
- exchange
identifier
- The
numeric value assigned to an exchange.
- F_Port
- A port
in a fabric where an N_Port or NL_Port may attach.
- fabric
- A group
of interconnections between ports that includes a fabric
element.
- Fast
SCSI
- Also
called FAST/10, with a synchronous transmission rate defined
in SCSI-2 to be between 5 MHz and 10 MHz. It is used in
data-in/out phases only. Higher rates are also proposed:
FAST/20 (at 20 MHz), FAST/40 (at 40 MHz) and up.
- FCC
- Federal
Communications Commission.
- FCP
- Fibre
Channel Protocol.
- fiber
- A wire
or optical strand. Spelled "Fibre" in the name Fibre Channel.
- fiber
optic cable
- Cable
made from thin strands of glass through which data is transmitted
in the form of light pulses. Used for high-speed transmission
over medium to long distances.
- Fibre
Channel
- A communications
network protocol also used as a carrier for SCSI-3 Serial.
- field

under a single naming code and stored in a computer or storage
medium.
- firmware
- A computer
program or software stored permanently in EPROM, PROM, or
ROM.
- FL_Port

in a fabric where an N_Port or an NL_Port may attach.
- frame
- An
indivisible unit for transfer of information in Fibre Channel.
- frame
header
