Storage
for Archiving
While
archiving has always been a critical practice for the long-term
security of business data, it is also increasingly becoming
a legal requirement for most organizations. Data archiving
is required for a business to comply with the latest regulatory
laws regarding good record keeping and the performance of
required audits. Data retained over a defined period of time
can support the analysis necessary after the occurrence of
data endangering events, and can also assist with solving
data problems or resolving data safety issues.
Advances
in technology have resulted in great increases in the shear
volume of information accumulated regularly by typical businesses.
The need to protect and reference large quantities of audio,
image and video data; in diverse application areas such as
medicine, remote sensing, industry engineering, entertainment,
education and on-line information services, has made it essential
for every organization to have a dedicated archiving and recovery
plan. Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) research,
however, reveals that 24% of companies do not regularly review
their archiving plans, and 59% of IT managers say that their
employees have no idea of what a disaster recovery plan is,
even when their firm does have one in place.
Proper archiving methods require that data remains accurate
and accessible for several years, or even decades. For this
reason, the longevity of the storage media, drive technology,
and storage hardware must all be considered priorities when
selecting a storage archive system. Cost-effective, long-term
storage solutions are the logical selection.
